Bone & Sinus Grafting

When you are about to get major dental work performed, there are some steps and procedures that may have to precede your work. If you are getting ready to have dental implants placed, Dr. William Vu or Dr. Andrew Madej may say you need bone and sinus grafting due to bone loss. Bone loss can occur when you have lost a tooth and bone material over time disappeared without the tooth. In order to fully restore your smile, our doctors will have to grow back the bone loss before any further work is to be done.

Before the grafting is done, the doctor will take x-rays of your mouth. That way, they can fully assess the anatomy of your jaw and sinus structure. When he examines the x-rays, he will be able to get a better idea as to where the bone loss is, and be better able to remedy the situation. Also during the consultation, you will be able to ask any questions you may have about the procedure. We want to make sure you are comfortable and ready the day of the procedure, so everything can go as smoothly as possible for you.

When performing your grafting, the doctor will cut into the area where the tooth used to be. Dr. William Vu or Dr. Andrew Madej will then lift the gum tissue, and expose the existing bone. By making a small window into the bone, the doctor will gently push the membrane-lined sinus up and away from the jaw. Continuing, he will then load the empty pocket with bone fragments or allograft material and then, once enough material has been used to fill the space, fasten the gum tissue via stitches. Over the course of six to nine months, your bone tissue with fuse with the grafted material, and the implants will be placed once everything has healed.

After the operation, it is normal to experience some swelling and bleeding, so it is important not to sneeze or blow your nose too forcefully. The doctor will prescribe you medications to make you as comfortable as possible. Our doctors are always there should you have any questions or concerns before, during, and after the procedure. We want to make sure you remain well-informed during the entire process.
